Coaching Thoughts:
I’ve started coaching a friend for Ironman, and I’ve had a lot of fun so far. We’ve been meeting once a week to work on his swim technique and I’ve been emailing him his training plan. We have just gotten started so I’ll update you as it goes. I believe its important to give back to the sport and other people. A kind of “pay it forward” or something. Since my knee has been a little messed up and school has been really busy I’ve found that helping other people with their goals can be about as exciting as working on my own goals.
When I would teach guitar lessons I would love it when my prescribed exercises would help students improve. Its a pretty similar feeling. I love it when I can prescribe workouts and swim drills that work to improve performance.
Kona Weekend:
The Ironman world championships usually inspires people to get up off the couch and go do an Ironman. Not for me, at least not yet. I watched about nine hours of the race yesterday and loved the suspense and the competition but Ironman is just not on the radar screen right now. It is still really motivating to see people push their mind and body so far. The overall felling I had after the race was how happy I was for all the competetors. I really get excited when I see people doing excellent things. It is a good reminder we should all be working toward important goals.
I was at work yesterday helping run the Kona party, which is my excuse for watching nine hours of a race in one day. It was great to see a lot of old friends and give away tons of gear. Its amazing what free stuff will do to help you make friends.
